Drilling RPM and feed calculator

The feed input is per revolution for drilling, not per cutting lip. Hole depth, coolant, pecking, drill geometry and material affect the appropriate values. Use the actual drill diameter and manufacturer cutting data.

Drill type, material, speed & tip length

Choose your drill and material, then enter cutting data for the exact tool. The initial numbers demonstrate the arithmetic.

Inches: RPM = 12 × SFM / (π × diameter). Metric: RPM = 1000 × m/min / (π × diameter). Applied RPM is capped at the entered spindle limit. Feed per minute = applied RPM × feed per revolution.

Ideal point projection = (drill diameter − tip flat diameter) / (2 × tan(included point angle / 2)). Tip depth from the hole entrance = full-diameter hole depth + point projection. This is geometry, not an absolute machine Z coordinate.

Formula and inputs

RPM = 1000 × Vc / (π × D); feed = RPM × feed per revolution.

Worked example

A 10 mm drill at 100 m/min and 0.05 mm/rev produces about 3,183 RPM and 159 mm/min.

Use the result in your setup

Confirm the input dimensions and unit system against your drawing before calculating. Keep full precision during a calculation and round only the final value to suit the measurement or programming requirement. A numerical result does not account for a machine’s complete setup, workholding or control configuration.
