Drill point height calculator

This is ideal cone geometry. Add point height to full-diameter hole depth only when the drawing calls for that condition and sufficient breakthrough clearance exists. Real drill tip relief and point grinding affect the final bottom shape.

Formula and inputs

Point height = diameter / (2 tan(included point angle / 2)).

Worked example

A 10 mm drill with a 118° point has an ideal point height of about 3.004 mm.

Use the result in your setup

Confirm the input dimensions and unit system against your drawing before calculating. Keep full precision during a calculation and round only the final value to suit the measurement or programming requirement. A numerical result does not account for a machine’s complete setup, workholding or control configuration.
