CNC TRUECUT / MACHINING REFERENCE

Pipe thread drilling and taper reference

Understand why pipe thread drill sizes, taper and gauging need a thread-specific manufacturer or standards reference.

Identify the complete thread family

Start with the full drawing callout. NPT, NPTF, BSPT and parallel pipe families are not interchangeable simply because the nominal pipe size looks similar. Nominal pipe size also does not directly equal the thread’s measured outside diameter. Confirm family, pitch, sealing method and specified inspection before machining.

Drilling is only one part of preparation

The recommended drill may depend on whether the process uses a tapered reamer, the material, engagement length and the tap geometry. A straight drilled pre-hole and a prepared tapered hole are different setups. Select the preparation sequence from the tap manufacturer’s data and the applicable specification, rather than using a universal diameter subtraction.

Calculate the geometry you actually have

Use the taper angle calculator for measured or specified diameters over an axial length. Enter full diameters and read half-angle separately from included angle. Use the thread lead calculator for pitch and feed arithmetic. Neither tool supplies gauge-plane or sealing acceptance requirements.

Confirm the final connection

A matching pitch is not sufficient to establish fit or a pressure-tight connection. Gauge type, engagement, thread form and the designated datum plane matter. Obtain the required manufacturer chart and use the drawing’s controlled standard. OSG’s chart library is a starting point for locating tool-specific data.
